It courses through scalenus medius then withaccompanies the  dorsaldorsal scapular vessels inferiorly, deep to levator scapulae where it lies on serratus posterior superior. It

It supplies both rhomboids on their deep surfaces and may also supply levator scapulae via a separate branch.
