Fowler-Philip angle
Updates to Article Attributes
Body
was changed:
The Fowler-Philip angle reflectsis the relation ofangle between the inferior calcaneus toand the posterior surface of the calcaneus.
Measurement
It is an angle measured on the lateral view of a loaded foot; formed between 2 lines:
- a line tangent to the posterosuperior border of the calcaneus and the calcaneal tuberosity
. - a line tangent to the inferior border of the calcaneus (longitudinal axis of the calcaneus), i.e. tangent to the calcaneal tubercle and processes of the calcaneal tuberosity (inferiormost point)
Interpretation
Its normal range is between 44° and 69°.
A Fowler-Philip angle of more than 75 degrees is supposedly diagnostic of enlargement of the posterior aspect of the calcaneus, as seen in the Haglund deformity or retrocalcaneal bursitis.
