The synovial membrane of the knee is the inner aspect aspect of the knee capsule, which produces synovial fluid to aid in the lubrication of the knee joint. It is also reflected on to to the articular margins of the femur, tibia and and patella. It does not cover the menisci or the cruciate ligaments posteriorly and is separated from the fibrous capsule by the popliteus tendon tendon. There is approximately 0.5 mL of synovial fluid present in a normal knee joint1.
