Large bowel obstruction is where there is a blockage of fecal matter in the large bowel usually due to mechanical causes.
Clinical presentation
Patients typically report cramp-like abdominal pain, abdominal distension, constipation, nausea and vomiting with large bowel obstructions.
Features secondary to complications may range from dehydration and electrolyte imbalances due to vomiting to peritonism and shock from perforation.
Pathology
The majority of cases of large bowel obstruction are due to mechanical causes. These include neoplasms, diverticular disease, volvulus, adhesions, hernias or fecal impaction.
