Esophageal squamous papilloma
Updates to Article Attributes
Oesophageal squamous papilloma is an uncommon finding on oesophagography (barium swallow). It is a benign lesion, but it is difficult to differentiate it from osophageal carcinoma on oesophagography and the diagnosis is usually made with endoscopic biopsy.
Clinical presentation
Often asymptomatic, but may cause dysphagia 2.
Pathology
Benign hyperplastic epithelial lesion consisting of a fibrovascular core with multiple small projections.
Despite its rarity, it may be linked to malignancyIt is very rarely associated with a malignant tumour 4 .
Radiographic features
Barium oesophagram (barium swallow)
small sessile polyp with a smooth or slightly lobulated contour 3
Differential diagnosis
Treatment
For a conclusive diagnosis and course of therapy, excision of papillomas is advised due to the possibility of malignancy in these lesions 5 .
