Overriding aortas are congenital heart defects wherein which the aorta is situated directly abovesuperior to a ventricular septal defect (VSD) rather than the normal position (i.e. left ventricle). As a result, the amount of oxygenated blood received by the aorta for distribution into the body is reduced. If left untreated, this can lead to cyanosis. Overriding aorta seldom occurs on its own and is one of the four conditions defined incomprising tetralogy of Fallot
