A pseudoPseudo-gestational sac is only important as it can be erroneously interpreted as a true gestational sac. This is especially dangerous if in the setting of positive pregnancy test and abdominal pain, if an ectopic pregnancy is to be excluded as a result of what is thought to be an intrauterine pregnancy.

Typically a pseudo-gestational sac is simply a small focal accumulation of fluid within the uterine cavity.

Radiographic features

Ultrasound
  • often seen as a intrauterine fluid collection surrounded by a single decidual layer 5
  • Itit is typically located centrally, does not demonstrate a yolk sac and does not have a double decidual sign.

It should be distinguished from an intra-decidual sign, which is also a sign of an early pregnancy.
