Sutural diastasis
Updates to Article Attributes
Body
was changed:
Sutural diastasis is an abnormal widening of the skull sutures. It may be physiological in a neonate in growth spurt.
Pathology
In non traumatic scenario accelerated growth of the sutural connective tissue without concurrent ossification is the underlying pathology.
Causes
- traumatic
- raised intracranial pressure such as intracerebral tumor, hydrocephalus ,subdural collection
- infiltration of the sutures example leukemia, lymphoma, neuroblastoma
- metabolic like hypoparathyroidism, rickets and hypophospahatasia
Radiological findingRadiographic features
- widening of the sutures may be appreciated on plain radiograph and is better still appreciated on CT.
- the suture width of > 10 mm at brith, > 3mm at 2 years and >2mm at 3 years are considered to be diagnostic of sutural diastasis.
- in case of trauma, it may be associated with or without fractures
- in case of mass lesions or elevated intracranial pressure, secondary evidence of the same would be demonstrated
