Peritonsillar abscess

Presentation

Odynophagia treated with ibuprofen. Progressively increasing pain, muffled voice, and dysphagia to solids and liquids. Denies any shortness of breath.

Age: 55 years
Gender: Male

There is a peripherally enhancing fluid collections within the right palatine tonsil. There is associated induration and graying of the right parapharyngeal fat planes consistent with peritonsillar inflammation. There is enlargement and edema of the uvula. There are enlarged bilateral level 2A lymph nodes.

Case Discussion

This is a case of a peritonsillar abscess. Otolaryngology was consulted for the concern of the right peritonsillar abscess. The abscess was drained using an 18 gauge needle yielding approximately 4 mL of purulent fluid. Subsequently, the abscess was debrided. The patient did well post-operatively and was discharged home without complication or recurrence.
