Presentation

PH motor vehicle accident. Suffered vocal cord paresis. Treated with vocal fold silicone prosthesis insertion (thyroplasty).

Patient Data

Age: 65
Gender: Male

Dense silicone prothesis placed into the right vocal fold causing the cord to adduct so that it opposes the left cord during speech

x-ray

The prosthesis is not visible on the conventional neck soft tissue radiograph.

Case Discussion

Thyroplasty is a procedure in which an implant is placed in the larynx alongside the vocal cord. The implant displaces the vocal cord to the midline and allows a paralyzed or weak vocal cord to touch the opposite cord in order to have a strong voice.
