Presentation
Right hip pain
Patient Data
Ultrasound of right hip joint shows a cleft in anterior labrum with mild anechoic fluid coursing within.
MRI shows a tear in the anterior acetabular labrum of right hip joint with minimal adjoining fluid signal.
Case Discussion
An acetabular labral tear causes in some cases no symptoms. In others, it causes pain in the groin (recently has been reported as an important cause of hip pain in a large percentage of patients). Over time, labral tears may cause permanent hip joint damage.
Acetabular labral tears have been reported in patients with trauma, hip dysplasia, degenerative osteoarthritis, and femoroacetabular impingement.
Ultrasound can reliably diagnose most tears of the acetabular labrum. MRI conventional & MRI arthrography are effective means of hip evaluation for labral tears.
