Known case of diabetes, complains of right foot pain

Patient Data

Age: Elderly
Gender: Male

Lucency of the head of 5th metatarsal bone with wide zone of transition, cortical disruption and periosteal reaction. This lesion does not extend to the 5th proximal phalanx.


Follow up radiograph demonstrates further bony destruction which now also involved the base of 5th proximal phalanx.

Case Discussion

Elderly diabetic male. The infection has crossed the joint which is characteristic of an infective process. Neoplasm classically does not cross the joint.
