Residual Myodil contrast within thecal sac

Presentation

Back pain for years.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female

Multiple well-defined rounded and ovoid dense shadows are seen within the spinal canal and along spinal nerve sheathes, mostly of old intra-thecal contrast (myodil) injections.

Bilateral osteitis condensans ilii.

Case Discussion

Iodophenylundecylic acid (brand name = Myodil (Glaxo))is an oily organic iodine containing contrast material which was used for myelography. Residual contrast remains for years. Has been implicated in development of arachnoiditis, perhapse of the order of 1%.
