Case Discussion

The Risser classification is used to describe the level of ossification of the iliac crest apophyses.

The Risser classification indicates skeletal maturity, especially that of the vertebrae. Because of this, the classification is widely used in the management of adolescent scoliosis.

The classification is divided into stages:

  • stage 0: no ossification center at the level of iliac crest apophysis
  • stage 1: apophysis <25% of the iliac crest
  • stage 2: apophysis between 25-50% of the iliac crest
  • stage 3: apophysis between 50-75% of the iliac crest
  • stage 4: apophysis >75% of the iliac crest
  • stage 5: fused iliac crest apophysis
