Presentation

Infant with a swollen scalp; no other findings. The child was born via cesarian section after a failed forceps delivery.

Patient Data

Age: 6 weeks
Gender: Male

Vertex scalp fluid collection that crosses suture lines.

Case Discussion

Subaponeurotic fluid collections are idiopathic and can present in the first months of life. They are thought to possibly represent self-limited CSF fistulas. Many of the reported cases followed instrument-assisted deliveries.
