Presentation
Myasthenia.
Patient Data
Well-defined lobulated anterior mediastinal mass with moderate heterogeneous enhancement in contact with the ascending aorta and the auricle of the right atrium. No hilar or mediastinal lymphadenopathy. No pleural or pericardial effusion.
Both lungs are clear (lung window not shown).
CT-guided biopsy showing the needle within the mediastinal mass.
Case Discussion
The clinical presentation and the CT features are suggestive of thymoma, biopsy proven as thymoma type B1.
There are five main histologic subtypes of thymomas:
type A: medullary thymoma
type AB: mixed thymoma
type B1: predominantly cortical thymoma
type B2: cortical thymoma
type B3: well-differentiated thymic carcinoma
