Transformer (illustration)

Diagram

Pictorial representation of a transformer; is important for generating the voltage required to produce X-rays.

The transformer pictured is a 'step-up' transformer, as the number of windings in the secondary coil outnumbers the primary coil windings.

Case Discussion

Briefly, a transformer works via electromagnetism. An electrical current is passed through the primary coil to induce a magnetic field in the iron core, which subsequently generates a current in the secondary coil.

The relationship between the number of windings of the coils and the voltages can be described by the first law of transformers;

  • Vs/Vp = Ns/Np

    • where Vs = secondary voltage, Vp = primary voltage, Ns = secondary windings and Np = primary windings.
