Capsulolabral insertion classification

There is variation in the relationship between the glenoid labrum and the anterior shoulder joint capsule. This has been divided into three types:

  • Type 1: capsule inserts into the labrum proper
  • Type 2: capsule inserts into the base of the labrum, or within 1cm of the base
  • Type 3: capsule inserts into the scapular neck, 1cm medial to the labral base

Differential diagnosis

Its importance for radiologists is to not confuse this normal variation with anterior labral injuries:
