Presentation

Chest pain and dysphagia.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male
Barium

Marked stricture is present at proximal of cervical esophagus causing barium stasis and aspiration, coating the upper trachea.

Case Discussion

Barium aspiration occurs occasionally during upper GI fluoroscopic studies using barium sulfate contrast, and is one of the essentials to look for during barium swallow examinations, which can lead to secondary pneumonia and subsequently respiratory distress.
