Chiari 1 malformation with syrinx

Presentation

Headache with numbness of both hands.

Patient Data

Age: 14 years
Gender: Male
  • caudal descent of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum (10 mm below the McRae line) with obliteration of the cisterna magna in keeping with Chiari I malformation

  • central cystic cavity of the spinal cord of low signal on T1, and high signal on T2 and STIR, extending from the cervicomedullary junction C2 to conus medullaris in keeping with a syrinx.
