Dentigerous cyst

Case contributed by Ibtisam Hasan
Diagnosis probable

Presentation

Post-operative radiograph performed following an open reduction internal fixation of the mandible

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male

XR Orthopantomogram + mandible

x-ray

Right mandibular body transverse fracture with fixation plate in situ.

Unilocular thin-walled cyst in the left hemimandible which is associated with the crown of the unerupted left lower 3rd molar tooth (best seen on the orthopantomogram performed alongside the mandibular radiograph) - these appearances are in keeping with a dentigerous cyst.

Case Discussion

Dentigerous cysts are rarely seen in the primary dentition stage and often present when the person is in their second dentition cycle (as in this case). This case demonstrates the classic appearances of a dentigerous cyst in the most common location for these to occur - the mandibular third molar.
