Presentation

History of accidentally hit by a certain steel cable 3 hrs ago at work, he is a mason, he did not wear safety gloves, on examination: (+) crushed injury left the ring and left middle finger, (+) tenderness, distal half of mentioned fingers.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

X-ray shows a comminuted fracture in the distal phalanx of the left ring finger.

Soft tissue shadows appear lacerated.

Case Discussion

  • Phalangeal fractures result from direct trauma (hammer-heavy object)or catching a finger in a closing door, or the toe is crushed between two rigid bodies.
  • Distal phalanx fractures are often accompanied by injury to the nail bed, nail avulsion, or subungual hematoma.
