Extensive pneumatization of the temporal bones bilaterally - petrous and squamous

Case Discussion

Pneumatization of the petrous temporal bone apices is an anatomical variant. It may be symmetrical bilaterally or asymmetrical, and when asymmetrical can mimic a tumor or other pathological lesion. Extensively pneumatized petrous temporal bones (especially the apex) can be the location of benign lesions such as cholesterol granuloma and cholesteatoma.
