Presentation
Ankle sprain.
Patient Data
There is a transverse fracture line through the proximal 5th metatarsal base, without involvement of articular surface compatible with Jones fracture.
Another fracture line (oblique) transverses the base of the 5th metatarsal bone, not reaching the articular surface is consistent with an avulsion fracture or pseudo-Jones fracture.
Case Discussion
Avulsion fractures of the 5th metatarsal styloid are the small fractures at the tip of the proximal 5th metatarsal, oriented mostly transversely. They usually do not reach the articular surface.
A Jones fracture is located at the meta-diaphyseal junction and has a predominantly horizontal course. It should not extend distally or extend to involve the articular surfaces.
