Presentation
Recurrent vomiting.
Patient Data
The gastric antrum is everted upwards. The cardiac end is below the level of the pylorus. The stomach shows a transverse orientation. Note the elevated left diaphragmatic copula.
Case Discussion
Gastric volvulus is characterized by an abnormal orientation of the stomach of more than 180 degrees. There are two types of volvulus. In the organo-axial volvulus, the stomach rotates around its longitudinal axis with the greater curvature everted upwards while the lesser curvature is directed downwards. In the mesenteroaxial volvulus, the pylorus and the gastric antrum are seen at a higher level compared to the cardiac end.
