Renal hemosiderosis

Case contributed by Michael Burns
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Incidental finding on study performed for further assessment of liver lesion seen on ultrasound.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male
mri

Marked diffuse abnormal T1 and T2 weighted low signal throughout the renal cortices bilaterally.  This has worsened since the previous MRI from 2015, and was not present on the more remote MRI from 2009.  On review of the patient's EMR, I note he has a diagnosis of hemolytic anemia. Appearance of the kidneys is favored to represent iron deposition secondary to chronic hemolysis.

Case Discussion

This patient had chronic hemolytic anemia, thought secondary to a prosthetic aortic valve (visible on the coronal sequences).
