Presentation

Bowing of bilateral legs.

Patient Data

Age: 2 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Fraying, splaying, and cupping of metaphysis with reduced density is seen. A bony spur extends from the metaphysis to surround the uncalcified growth plate. Bowing of bilateral tibia and visualized femur is seen.

Case Discussion

Rickets is a disorder of growth plates resulting from diminished calcium phosphate product causing failure of hypertrophied chondrocytes in the growth plate to undergo apoptosis resulting in increased uncalcified osteoid in the immature skeleton.
