Patient Data

Age: 50 years

A short segment of eccentric thickening involving the sigmoid colon that's looped anterior to a normally positioned cecum with associated fat stranding, a thin rim of free fluid, and a loculated gas-containing collection. A small, inflamed diverticulum is also seen.

Case Discussion

Feature consisting of acute diverticulitis with abscess formation (stage IIb acute diverticulitis, according to the Hinchey classification for acute diverticulitis).

The sigmoid colon is redundant and atypically located on the right side of the abdominopelvic cavity with normally positioned rest of bowel loops (clearly noticed in the CT scan and can be suspected in the scout image).
