Stress fracture - base of 5th metatarsal bone

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Persistent right foot pain for 2 months.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female

On presentation

x-ray

A fracture line is seen involving the outer cortex of the base of 5th metatarsal bone which is thickened with increased density.

Follow up after 2 weeks

x-ray

Same appearance of the fracture at the base of 5th metatarsal.

Case Discussion

According to Dameron-Lawrence-Botte classification of proximal 5th metatarsal fractures, the fracture is only involving the outer cortex and present at zone 3, at a level distal to the 4th-5th intermetatarsal articulation, this is considered a stress fracture.
