Patient Data

Age: 11 years

The left submandibular duct shows a 5mm echogenic stone with a posterior acoustic shadow. The gland is not enlarged and elicits a normal echo pattern. The proximal excretory ducts are undilated.

Case Discussion

Ultrasonography is the first choice in the diagnosis of sialolithiasis in children and has the advantage of no radiation hazards. Ultrasound can visualize stones that are radiolucent and is also able to detect acute glandular inflammatory changes.

The submandibular gland is the most affected salivary gland(80% of cases).
