Presentation
History of old jaw trauma at birth, which was treated surgically at 2 years of age, now the patient complains of limited mouth opening.
Patient Data
Near-complete fusion/ankylosis of the right temporomandibular joint with broadening of the mandibular condyle and pseudoarthrosis with the mandibular condyle. Hypoplastic right mandibular condyle and subsequent ipsilateral chin deviation to the right side.
Case Discussion
Temporomandibular joint ankylosis represents fibrous or bony fusion between the mandibular condyle and fossa, which is usually traumatically caused by condyle fracture. It could also be caused by infections, degenerative diseases, injection of corticosteroids, forceps delivery and complications of TMJ surgery.
It usually develops before 10 of age, however, it could develop at any age.
Patients usually present with progressive limitation of mouth opening, facial deformity, and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.
