Presentation

Long-standing scalp swelling. No complain of pain, discharge or skin discoloration.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

A well-defined oval shaped heterogenous echogenicity lesion measuring approximately 1.7 x 3.0 cm is noted in the subcutaneous soft tissues of the right parieto-occipital scalp. Multiple tiny hyperechoic foci, likely calcifications, are seen within it. No internal vascularity is seen in it on color Doppler ultrasound examination.

Histopathology of the excised lesion shows partially ruptured trichilemmal cyst.

Case Discussion

Well-defined oval shaped heterogenous echogenicity lesion containing multiple calcifications, noted in the subcutaneous soft tissues of the right parieto-occipital scalp. Possible differential includes trichilemmal cyst or sebaceous cyst/epidermal inclusion cyst. The lesion was excised and the histopathology showed trichilemmal cyst.
