Presentation
Patient presented to the ER with loss of consciousness.
Patient Data
Type II dens fracture with posterior displacement of the dens and C1 relative to the remainder of C2.
Displaced fragmented dens of C2 with marginal sclerosis without significant bone marrow edema, suggesting old fracture compressing the thecal sac associated with kinking of the upper spinal cord without abnormal signal intensity.
Straightening of cervical spine indicating muscle spasm.
Degenerative changes manifested by dehydrated discs and osteophyte formation.
Normal vertebral body bone marrow signal.
No tonsillar herniation.
No intrinsic cord pathology.
Case Discussion
Type II dens fracture is the most common form of dens fractures; it is an unstable fracture.
The dens is also known as the odontoid process or peg.
