Presentation

Congenital hydrocephalus

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female

Left sided VA shunt

x-ray

There is a left-sided ventriculoatrial shunt and a redundant, discontinuous right-sided VP shunt tubing. Very limited inspiration with patient rotated to the right limiting assessment. Visualized lungs are essentially clear. No major new consolidation or lobar collapse is evident.

Tip of the VA shunt in the right atrium (yellow arrow). Right-sided redundant fractured VP shunt (green arrows).

Case Discussion

A VP shunt is more common than a VA shunt for continuous CSF drainage. However, this patient with congenital hydrocephalus had multiple revisions for obstructed VP shunts which subsequently led to a VA shunt insertion instead.
