Lateral mesencephalic veins (LMV)

The lateral mesencephalic veins (LMV) form an important supratentorial-infratentorial anastomosis from the basal veins of Rosenthal to the superior petrosal sinus.

The lateral mesencephalic veins usually course through or near the lateral mesencephalic sinus. They receive venous blood from tributaries draining the lemniscal trigone and/or the quadrigeminal plate posteriorly and/or the cerebral peduncles anteriorly ¹ and then divert the blood to the superior petrosal sinus and the basal veins of Rosenthal connecting the supratentorial with the infratentorial venous system ^1,2.

History and etymology

The lateral mesencephalic vein was first described by the Austrian anatomist Ferdinand Hochstetter ³.

Clinical importance

The lateral mesencephalic vein might become obstructed as a result of transtentorial herniation or surgical posterior fossa procedures with subsequent hemorrhage ^1,2.

The lateral mesencephalic vein is often in the drainage of tentorial dural arteriovenous fistulas ².
